A good murder mystery elevated by fantastic performances from Poitier and Steiger as well as the tense, overheated southern atmosphere sustained throughout.

***R.I.P. Sidney Poitier (February 20, 1927 - January 6, 2022)***
Watched this film a few times and some of the scenes are still vivid in my mind. While it is very good murder mystery, its greatness are the performances of…

Excellent film on how stupid people can be in the face of a talented, smart black detective. Kind of embarrassing for white people. Sidney Portier is great, but he always is.

I just wanted to comment about the soundtrack by Quincey Jones. IMHO it is a jazzy/bluesey take on the traditional gumshoe detective movie music with a hodge podge of things thrown in, helping to support diverse aspects of the story.…

Essential part of our library's collection, but with lots of scratches and skips on this copy, probably because of its popularity. Great snapshot of the mid 1960s, and fun, even if it's a languid and semi-convoluted story, with some…

Outstanding performances by Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger (who won a Best Actor Oscar). Great Quincy Jones score too (which should have been nominated).

I borrowed "In the Heat of the Night" because it was on my list of award-winning, famous movies that I must see before they disappear or are remade terribly as a feature or movie of the week for a cable network or streaming service. I…

A terrific drama - good and interesting characters, vacillations in the development in their relationships, and humane resolution to it all. There were a lot of reaction shots and cutbacks, and little music.

Great film. It puts on display the complexity of people and situations. Nothing and nobody is usually quite as simple as it would seem. What a joy to see.

My, my. I watched this to see Sidney Poitier--- always marvelous--- but also discovered the acting wonders of Rod Steiger. The two play-off of each other in an uncanny manner. MUST see.

As a fan of the film, the 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition adds much to the value of the story. The commentary by Director Norman Jewison, Lee Grant, Rod Steiger, and Haskell Wexler, the Cinematographer, puts one right on the set in…

Just saw this movie on KQED last Sat. nite. Still one of the best civil rights movies around...Great performance by all, Steiger got Academy award, mainly because he did not get it in previous year for his really tortured role in The…
