In the spring of 1989, Barbara Woodley, a young photographer from British Columbia, began a project to document some of Canada's most inspirational women. She travelled across Canada several times over three years, visiting large cities and small rural communities; she listened to many passionate opinions as to who should be included in the project; and she photographed some of the most remarkable women of this country, women who have achieved success in a wide range of endeavours--from sports to politics, from business to the arts, from law to humanitarian works. Barbara Woodley received extraordinary cooperation from her subjects. Each seems to participate in her photograph in a unique way--with strength, dignity, serenity, or sense of humour made visible. This active participation enlivens these photographs and sets them apart from the ordinary. The result is sixty-six stunning portraits, and a superb tribute to the achievements of Canadian Women.
