The rhythm and rhymes make this tale of the clever mouse outwitting bigger, more threatening animals he encounters in the woods a great read-aloud. Kids can relate to the small victor.

I recently saw a friend's picture posted on Facebook that revealed her oldest son reading The Gruffalo to his younger sister and his cousins. Up to that point I have never read The Gruffalo. I have heard about it over the years, I have seen it on the shelves at bookstores, but I have never read it. And I was not disappointed in the least when I finally sat down and read it. I enjoyed it immensely. Such a simple story of a mouse walking through the woods, eyed by hungry predators, who creates a story of a gruffalo to scare off the predators. Unbeknownst to the mouse, there WAS a gruffalo wandering the woods! Before the book ends, the mouse proves his cunning and sly ways. Overall, the book was an excellent book to read. The story was fun and entertaining, the art was colorful and childlike. I recommend reading The Gruffalo.

A house favourite. As always, Julia Donaldson's writing is singsongy and wonderful to read aloud. The story is clever and the illustrations are wonderful. We love reading The Gruffalo again and again.

This was one of my son's favorite books way back when. It was out of print at that time so I found and ordered a used copy. He was so happy to listen to it again and again. The mouse's fabulous wit and the unexpected twist at the end make for a story that keeps preschoolers absolutely entranced.

A wonderful book! The mouse outsmarts a variety of creatures who want to eat him, all in fun rhyme. Julia Donaldson never disappoints!

This book has beautiful and colorful illustrations that are engaging. The story contains a clever mouse who uses his intelligence to keep from being eaten. The concept of animal homes is introduced to children. I like the fact that the mouse avoids violent conflict by using his wits. By the end of the story, the big, scary Gruffalo is the one you want to feel sorry for and to become his friend. I look forward to reading the other books with the Gruffalo as a character. I think the advertized age range of grades k-3 is appropriate for this book.
