I love the Cordelia Gray character -- sure wish P.D. James had written more than two books featuring her.

This was a 1973 Edgar nominee but, no worries. Even at that point James was a successful, much decorated author. This clever, satisfying tale features Cordelia Grey but James' beloved Dagleish hovers in the background. As always, the social fabric is woven into the plot and was a delightful aspect of the story for me, looking back to the world (can it be possible?) fifty years after publication. Best of luck with the clues but be forewarned; it isn't simple.

I don't read many mysteries and this was an enjoyable change of pace for me. A good book for someone who pays attention to detail and likes to formulate their own conclusions from it. A classic "Who dunnit?" mystery.

'Can it be that hard to run a detective agency?' Cordelia finds out when her first case involves an apparent suicide.

Very much enjoyed this, and the character Cordelia Gray. On wait list for another one with her, The Skull Beneath the Skin

Bookwoman247 Sep 03, 2010

After Corcdelia Gray's senior partner commits suicide rather than face a slow painful death by cancer, she inherits the struggling Pryde's Detective Agency.

In her first solo case, she is hired by Sir Ronald Callender, a prominent scientist and businessman, who hires her to find out why his son abruptly dropped out of Cambridge and hanged himnself just a few weeks later.

As she investigates, she begins to suspect that that Mark Callender may have been murdered. As she follows a labrynthine trail of clues, she uncovers secret after secret. Exposing one or more of these secrets could quite possibly threaten someone, including Mark's possible murderer, and might, in turn, endanger Cordelia.

I liked this a lot. It was a real page-turner, and was brilliantly written. I was slightly disappointed by the ending, though.
