This series is an utter delight. I usually read non-fiction as I an unable to work and get out of the house much and need something to engage my mind. This series however is an escape but has heart, history, love, kindness, humor and suspense which keeps the pages turning almost by themselves and so sad when it ends- but glad there are 16 books in the series.

McCall Smith's words continue to captivate in the second novel of his No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. In Tears of the Giraffe, Mma Romatswe sets out to discover the fate of an American woman's son, who disappeared years earlier. Meanwhile, Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni finds himself in hot water after offering to fix the local orphanage's water heater. Unscrupulous maids and complicated marriages round out Mma Romatswe's business in this novel. Although the plot moves quickly, it is suprisingly intricate, with connections between the 'side' stories that build up the personality of the characters and emotion in the reader. Touching and exciting by turns, the novel also has a wonderfully subtle addition of humor interwoven. Mma Romatswe is the heroine we all need, and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni is the perfect complement for her. I look forward to book 3!

I enjoy the politeness and kindness of these characters. Precious Ramotswe is so kind and comes to unique conclusions to her cases.
It's refreshing to hear about Africa in a subtle way. A little history peeks in throughout the book.
I will definitely be reading more about Precious and her fiance JLB Matekoni.

What a delightful, gentle, atmospheric book! The mannerisms and lifestyle of these wonderfully drawn characters, thoroughly permeated by the post-colonial African traditions of Botswana, give this little "tea cozy" mystery a charm all its own. In the end, as per the formula, everything works out for the best. And of course that's all too neat and perhaps even trite, but it doesn't matter; that's the way it's supposed to be. This is escapist reading, intended to lower one's blood pressure, it's a refuge from the gritty realities of mayhem, corruption and tragedies big and small that make up our world. McCall Smith acknowledges those realities but they're only allowed to peek over the back fence, keep their distance and let Precious Ramotswe get on with her job of setting things right.
I kept hearing echoes of Peter Pan. A modern day fairy tale.

A good read, second in the series. Mma Ramotswe's life evolves in this story in a good way. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

As the characters progress and you see how they evolve, so do the other stories of mysteries/sherlock holmses-ing for the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. As well as, some new additional characters give us better insight to the stories that unfold.

In this second book in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, Mma Ramotswe is newly engaged to her friend Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni. Her fledgling detective business in Gaborone, Botswana, is doing well, and she takes on several new cases, including those of a cheating wife and a son who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. She also learns that her secretary, Mma Makutsi, has some detecting talents of her own.

What is quickly becoming one of my favorite aspects of the books is the subtle ways the author provides small morsels of cultural information to the reader. Although chances are small I'll ever be fortunate enough to visit myself, I feel like I'm slowly getting to know Botswana.

This is the second in the series that features Mma Precious Ramotswe and her detive agency run by a lady in Botswana. Here we find Mma Ramotswe happily engaged to the most perfect man in Gabarone, and looking forward to her marriage. However she soon finds herself involved in a missing person case gone cold, and, unexpectedly, a mother! And of course she deals with all of this with her usual good humor and aplomb.
