I think this book offers a good approach for people who find themselves at odds with pregnancy limitations. Being scientifically minded, I was already reading NIH studies before I knew this book existed and I wanted to check it out to see if there was anything I was missing in my approach.

My primary concern was my fish intake, but the findings in this book were consistent with the suggested revised recommendations by the former head of the FDA's seafood division. So I'm good.

I read the alcohol section even though I had already decided that I wasn't going to drink while pregnant. One thing to consider is how the studies she uses are applicable to you as an individual. I get the Asian glow that's indicative of an inactive aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme which would allow more of the toxic part alcohol breakdown to stay in my body. Studies based on European populations aren't going to be as helpful to me.

One thing that bothered me was that the bottom lines were phrased rather conclusively when I felt it should've been more like "the data suggests that in this population..." Other than that, I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt this way about pregnancy guidelines.

I liked how the author uses data to compare facts and evaluate the hidden biases in every rule related to pregnancy. But take her advice with a grain of salt, there are some discussions which are purely her opinions, and following the doctor's orders never hurt!

This book spoke to me. I appreciated the statistical evaluation of what is often an emotional journey. I did not agree with a few of Oster's conclusions, but she bluntly states in the opening that we each have to weigh the costs and benefits for ourselves personally. Her job was to lay out the data and let us evaluate as we see fit.

Please note that the author states very clearly throughout the book that she is not a doctor but an economist. Her entire profession is about looking at the numbers and making conclusions based off of those numbers. I found this book to be wonderful and would suggest it to anyone who wants to know why things are placed off-limits when you’re pregnant. She states that everyone will make different decisions based off of the same data again and again. She never tells you that you should do something or not (except for smoking), but will say what she did and you can decide what YOU want to do.
Wonderful read!

Please note that this author has no medical training, so why has she written a book giving away her own medical opinions? The author has chosen to ignore anyone and everyone who disagrees with her on how dangerous any alcohol consumption is during the pregnancy. FASD (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorders) is a FACT. She has had only one child, so it does not make her an expert on raising children, either. Read this book, but do not argue with her because she don't like anyone who disagrees with her.
