Jaspreet Singh's follow up to "Chef" wrestles with one of the most shocking moments in the history of the Indian nation. On November 1, 1984, a day after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination, Raj, a nineteen-year-old student, travels back to Delhi from a class trip with his professor and mentor. As the group disembarks at the train station, a mob surrounds the professor, throws a tire over him, douses him in gasoline, and sets him alight. Raj moves to Ithaca, N.Y., earns his Ph.D., marries, has children, and takes a post at Cornell, but he finds that his past will not leave him alone. Fusing documentary and fictional impulses, connected to a largely untouched event in Indian history, Singh has crafted an affecting and important novel.

This is a novel about the unresolved past of the massacre of Sikhs in India in 1984 following the assassination of Ghandi. The author, himself a research scientist, uses scientific metaphors and images throughout to tell his winding story about the effect of the political on the personal. Recommended.
