This story is genuinely told by a navy SEAL and reads as such. It's as if you're sitting having a coffee listening to a soldiers tale. I've always been curious about people who choose to put their lives on the line for their country. Marcus is a passionate patriot giving insight to how he sees things and his point of view. I've always had respect for our military - this just amplifies that feeling. A great read for anyone wanting to understand the life of someone that most of us will never understand or see.

This was an excellent book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys learning about our nation's military heroes and what they sacrifice to ensure the safety of our country and our way of life.

I thought this book was horrible. Marcus Luttrell apparently is living in a fantasy world and if you know about the military and read this book, it should be classified as fiction. The guy is delusional, and apparently the family of Mike Murphy also thought the same when the book came out.

Everything he talks about, from his training, to the tactics, to this incident itself is just not grounded in reality. Between bashing liberals and attacking the media, he also tries to make a case that the proper, military solution to them being discovered by a bunch of goat herders was to kill everyone involved. Besides not having any good answers as to why a group of SEALS were discovered by goat herders, to promote the outright execution of civilians was a surprise, even if it did originate from an extreme, far right conservative.

His description of the firefight was actually plausible, everything else though was just down right delusional. The movie 'Lone Survivor' was actually pretty good. This book through should be considered fiction.

I found Marcus Luttrell’s Lone Survivor – Operation Red Wing Seal Team 10 very slow going for the first half of the book; it was not my first US Navy Seal book. I guess I have read too many books about the Navy Seal training program and this book went into too much detail for my taste. However, it was a great story after Marcus got into the Operation Red Wing story. I did find it odd that at the end of the book Luttrell writes about receiving the Navy Cross along with two other members of his team, but he fails to tell the reader about the ‘Medal of Honour’ received by his best friend and his team leader, Lt. Michael P. Murphy. Readers will just have to read ‘Seal of Honor,’ Operation Red Wing and the Life of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, USN by Gary Williams to read his story. Senior Doctor-at-Bass! D. A.

This book is exceptional. I read it in one sitting. Navy SEAL Sniper mission is almost completely wiped out by Taliban forces. One critically wounded SEAL is protected by a local tribe. (at great risk to the tribe.) Worth reading.

When President John F. Kennedy created the Navy Sea Air Land commando units, or SEALs, it was to act as an aid to democratic insurgency movements the world over [also the reason he saved the Army Special Forces from extinction]. Unfortunately, with the Carter and Reagan administrations destabilizing the once-secular country of Afghanistan, ending with the situation which exists today, and Hollywood-like books and movies, such heroism is rendered misplaced and nonsensical by the powers-that-be and their ultimate agenda.

Thank you to the navy SEALS and of course to all other veterans who have sacrificed to protect their country, as well as ours. I had a hard time fighting back my tears while I listened to the audiobook for this book. I agree with some of the reviewers that this author is not the greatest writer in the world, but his message is clearly told.

Man... If it wasn't for SEALs, where would we be? Outstanding book. Very well done and the suspense never lets up. Remember though that the author is a SEAL not a writer. So it isn't the best writing in the world but this is still a gripping, fast paced novel that every-one should read!

I have read a few books like this because 4 yrs ago my cousin was KIA in Afganistan. So far, this is the best book for describing what they go really go through in training to be SEALS & just how hard it is, physically & psychologically; which entails mainly the first half of the book. The second half of the book describes the Ops they were on when Marcus Luttrell's SEAL teamates were KIA. And what they went through and how Marcus Luttrell survived, which is a miracle in itself. You will be stunned by their heroics & never give in mantra ~ they literally fought to their last breaths. A must read for every American!

I agree with skisurf...sounds like sour grapes to me.

Violence: People are shot blown up and stabbed. Many moderately graphic decriptions of deaths and gore. SEALs die in brutal ways and same with the Talibans. Lots of violence but nothing overly graphic or disturbing.
