From executive producer Angelina Jolie Pitt comes the award-winning drama based on the inspirational true story of a young Ethiopian girl and a tenacious lawyer embroiled in a life-or-death clash between cultural traditions and their country's advancement of equal rights. When 14-year-old Hirut is abducted in her rural village's tradition of kidnapping women for marriage, she fights back, accidentally killing her captor and intended husband.

The story should have come across as gripping and powerful. It should have had us on the edges of our seats, wanting to know what happens next.

Instead, while the kidnapping and rape of a young teenager is horrific, as presented here, it never exactly comes across that way. Maybe the film makers didn't want to offend the native cultures in Ethiopia; it seemed that way. A better director could have had this be a film we'd all want to recommend to our friends.

Excellent story/documentary about modernization vs tradition in Ethiopia. There's nothing second rate about the quality of the production like one of the comments say though. Well done.

This, my first Ethiopian film, is based upon one of the great civil rights cases. Instead of dealing with race or sexual identity as in America, the civil right here is to avoid being a sexual slave. While the construction of the film and the camera work is rather conventional, the subject and the realistic characters are what make this a great film. The actions of the civil rights workers won a Nobel Prize.

Angelina Jolie produced this amazingly true story about a 12 year old Ethiopian girl. Her story and many like her would never have come out without the help of Angelina Jolie. The movie is gripping from start to finish. The acting by this young Ethiopian girl will impress you. Films from Ethiopia have a future with outstanding work like "Difret"!
