Haunting and creepy, this film stayed with me awhile. Fine acting by the leads to build tension and suspense, and the decay of the home and surroundings was a perfect metaphor. An excellent Gothic horror, but like most films of this genre not one I'm likely to watch again as it was hard enough to sit still through it the first time!

I have to say that this movie is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen, but plot-wise, there are many slow points. This movie has been categorized as ‘horror’, but it really is just a dark, gothic-victorian romance movie. There are some spooky aspects to it, but that does not make it a horror film. The cast is perfect and convey the characters perfectly and each scene has an amazing set. Just the art of this film is worth watching it, as well as the soundtrack of it. It could be better, it could be worse. Overall, I’d watch it again, just not many times. 3.5/5 Stars. @sideswipefirefight of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

This movie was marketed as a horror film but in reality is a straight-up gothic romance. Dark, moody, but beautiful all at the same time. As Edith describes her book within the movie, this film is "A story with a ghost in it" but not necessarily a "ghost story."

Well. Definitely a period piece. Moody, dark atmosphere, but not sure it was scary. Not a new idea, but an interesting setting. Tom Hiddleston is sure handsome. Mia has quite the wardrobe.

Absolutely amazing movie . Guillermo del Toro is such an amazing director . The effects, the story and it's progression, oh lords!!! a fantasy loving girl like me dug this movie so so much . Checking it out again because it's my type of movie

A little bit of a letdown for me, not because it was bad, but because its story didn't engage me much. I found the twists predictable and the CG ghosts a bit too much to be chilling (then again, the ghosts prove to be not what they seem, so that could have been intentional; still, the CG is so plastic-y that the ghosts don't even conjure a proper uncanny effect). The heroine Edith got a bit bland once she married Sir Thomas, going from a proactive rebel to a timid mouse of a human being-- though once again, this could have been the point, given the turn the story takes, but I still wasn't very invested in her and she never regained my interest after the forty minute mark.

I love all the things Guillermo del Toro is homaging-- the Hammer Horror films of the 1950s and 1960s, the Brontes, Poe, 1920s horror cinema, Hitchcockian suspense-thrillers-- but the film never rises above being a fun homage, at least to me. Still, it's a good movie, with gorgeous visuals and fine performances from the cast. I admire how it's a horror movie that doesn't rely on jump scares or crass shock-- like a lot of the horror movies I love, it relies more on dread, the unknown, and atmosphere to conjure fright. but something just didn't grab me about this movie. By the end, I just felt hollow. As it is, the movie lacks the imagination of Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, which I felt was a much more interesting fantasy-horror story with a much more engaging lead. It had style and substance; Crimson Peak only has style.

I love this movie when I first saw it! It's way better than previous horror and ghost movies I seen

I love the Victorian gothic style of this movie. It is not your typical ghost story. I love re-watching this movie. Tom Hiddleston is as gorgeous as ever.

I found this to be a well crafted and suspenseful film, with brooding images in contrast to bright colours. I watched this film because of it being a Guillermo del Toro creation. Good cast and although the story has been told before, this was a nice interpretation.
The bonus features a few minutes of deleted scenes, and about 14 minutes of behind the scenes of the house and times of the 1901 Boston period that it was set in.

Amazing, it just. Kept. Getting. Worse. The credits were better than the movie. I tried to give it a chance even though it didn't seem to be my thing, and I regret it. Even Thomas Hiddleston cannot make me enjoy a stupid horror movie (butt nice try).

Tons of quotes in IMDb. Here are a few:

Edith Cushing: You're monsters. Both of you!
Lucille Sharpe: Funny. That's the last thing Mother said, too.
Edith Cushing: Ghosts are real, this much I know. There are things that tie them to a place, very much like they do to us. Some remain tethered to a patch of land, a time and date, the spilling of blood, a terrible crime... There are others, others that hold onto an emotion, a drive, loss, revenge, or love. Those, they never go away.
Thomas Sharpe: A house as old as this one becomes, in time, a living thing. It starts holding onto things... keeping them alive when they shouldn't be. Some of them are good; some of them bad... Some should never be spoken about again.
