Billy Ghostkeeper, the compliance officer for a First Nations band, has been murdered. His spirit guide, a smart-aleck crow, has told him he can not cross over to the great hunting grounds until he solves the mystery behind his murder. Billy enlists his bumbling, hapless cousin, Dale, who is a wannabe gangsta rapper, to convince their Aunt Kena to get involved. Kena is an elder who has the power that allows her to cross back and forth into the spirit world. Kena grudgingly agrees to help even though it messes up her TV watching and bingo playing. The antics of these three hilarious characters will keep you enthralled in this exciting thriller.

Ghost Detective by Zachary Muswagon is a fast-paced novel that embraces the Native Indian culture. It features a man named Billy Ghostkeeper and his cousin Dale Ghostkeeper. Billy had been shot in the head and left for dead. Helping him to accept his death is his crow spirit guide. Billy can’t move on to the “Happy Hunting grounds” until he makes amends for his mistakes in his previous life, and discovers who murdered him. With the help of his younger cousin Dale, a gangsta poser, he discovers his killer . . .

I enjoyed how the author captured each character’s culture and personality, and created an interesting murder mystery with twists at every turn. I enjoyed Dale’s run-in with Gar’s gang and how the cousins’ friendship grew stronger every time they worked together. I would recommend this novel to teens that are looking for a hint of Native culture or a mystery to unravel.
