In this terrifying, action-fueled film based on the Marvel comic series, five young people who demonstrate special powers are brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments they are told will cure them of the dangers of their powers. Invited by Dr. Cecilia Reyes to share their stories about when their powers first manifested, the five ‘patients’ come to understand that they are in a class of people called mutants, who have historically been marginalized and feared.

I really wanted to like this movie more than I actually did. It takes the Demon Bear storyline - arguably the best storyline of the whole New Mutants franchise - and centers Dani Moonstar (Mirage) as the primary character.

Positives:
The friendship (and relationship) that Dani and Rahne (Wolfsbane) begin. Yay for queer girl rep that doesn't feel (entirely) like fan service to thrill the fanboys!
Ilyana's (Magik) powers - her armor, Soulsword, and Limbo are very cool - I just wish we'd gotten to see a lot more of that.

Cons:
Poor pacing (this movie DRAGS).
Few characters and no change in locations - virtually the whole film takes place at the hospital, with 6 characters total.
It's less a mutant story like we're used to and more of a horror/action film that happens to have mutants.
The writers seem to have assumed the audience would have a greater familiarity with the characters, so some characters (like Roberto) have very little by way of backstory explained. I would have liked clearer definition of who each character was, what their powers were, and their history.
Ilyana is a total jerk most of the movie - she would have been a better character if she'd spent less time pitted against Dani and more time engaging with her powers. (Also, I'm so tired of women being pitted against each other.)

If you, like me, wanted to see more of Magik being, well, Magik, I highly recommend checking out her origin story in the graphic novel "Magik: Storm and Ilyana", which collects the 4-issue mini-series from the 80s.

Weird movie, not good for kids! Creepy teenagers with mutant powers who are all mental patients.

No comparison to older Marvel stories. The best I could come up with is these new mutants is comparable to John Hughes's 1985 The Breakfast Club. Only these teenagers have budding super powers and are stuck in a dreary
facility sponsored by some evil conglomerate. While the outsider teenagers in the Breakfast Club had a some depth for teenagers in the 80's these teenagers carry some deep secrets and always seem to be antisocial toward their adult authority and a lot of times towards each other.
These teens have a hard time accepting their super powers and for most of the movie are in despair about it.

Very boring movie. I had higher expectations for a superhero movie. But the story is weak and the actors aren't anything to write home about either.

Placed in a creepy Gothic-looking secret facility, ",Twenty miles from the nearest town," the five teens are the only survivor's of separate major deaths, each escaping virtually unscathed and the reason being that each of them are, "Mutants," or so they're told by the sole Doctor of the entire facility, which they all then assume is one of the old X-Men Academy. And that is about the extent of any comparison to the former Marvel character's as it gets because what happens next is more like a teen horror film than anything else. I don't read graphic novel's or comics so I admit that I am unfamiliar with this particular series but I think it was misrepresented. Although, it is describe as 'terrifying,' it should not be under 'action. '

This movie is made for teenagers (13+). One thing about this film is that the characters are sort of archetype characters. If you are used to seeing these kinds of characters, you probably will feel the movie is rather lackluster. Adults may find it dull, while teenagers will find it riveting and exciting. I think the film deserves some credit, but some of the CGI is terrible and unrealistic.

Nothing is innovative at all about this movie. It does not remind you of "X-Men" at all. Therefore, if you watch to watch for this reason, you will be sorely disappointed. It reminds me more of "Split." If that is your type of movie, you will probably like this one too.

If this had been a stand alone movie, free of any associations to any franchise, it would have been okay. But as an X-Men movie....the final one at that (so they claim), it was extremely disappointing, if not downright boring.

Our family was looking forward to this one, but after about 40 mins, I asked if anyone was actually enjoying it. No one was, so we turned it off.

Enjoyable movie. Not particularly well written and has a pointlessly shoehorned romance subplot, but it's quite entertaining and has good action.

I waited so long to get to see this and I was expecting a great movie and I got a good one but not great! Special effects are ok nothing to write home about and is based on the Demon Bear series in the New Mutants comic! Right off the bat Magic and Lock Keep are the best characters and i hope that she shows up again. Also Warlock and Cipher are sadly missing as is Magma from comics! It moves along well enough and it is good just not great! And the Dragon Lockeep was Kitty Prides pet not Magics. Oh well I will say yes it’s a good flick just don’t go into it expecting great!
